Real-world range varies with speed, headwind, load, and how hard you ride. Highway cruising often beats the EPA-style number; aggressive canyon riding can drop it 20–30%. Treat range-to-reserve as the point to start looking for a station, not the point you'll actually coast to a stop.

The formula

There is no mystery here — just distance = fuel × economy, applied twice so you get the number that actually matters on the road (range to reserve) alongside the theoretical maximum:

Full-tank range   = tank (gal) × mpg
Range to reserve  = (tank − reserve) × mpg
Fuel cost / mile  = gas price ÷ mpg
Trip fuel (gal)   = trip miles ÷ mpg
Trip fuel cost    = trip fuel × gas price

Worked example

A sport-tourer with a 4-gallon tank averaging 45 mpg, with about 0.8 gallon of reserve, on a 220-mile day at $3.60/gallon:

A quick reference for full-tank range (miles). Subtract your own reserve to get the planning number. Most street bikes fall between 40 and 55 mpg; big cruisers and ADV bikes with the throttle open can dip into the 30s.

Frequently asked questions

How do I calculate my motorcycle’s range? +

Multiply usable tank capacity by fuel economy: range = tank (gallons) × mpg. A 4-gallon tank at 45 mpg gives 180 miles on a full tank. Subtract your reserve to get the more useful number — how far you can go before the low-fuel light comes on.

What is “range to reserve” and why does it matter? +

Most tanks hold a reserve — the fuel still available after the warning light. Range to reserve = (tank − reserve) × mpg. That is the distance you can plan on before you need to start looking for a station, rather than the absolute distance to a dead stop, which you never want to test.

How is fuel cost per mile calculated? +

Cost per mile = gas price ÷ mpg. At $3.60/gallon and 45 mpg that is 8 cents per mile. For a specific ride, trip fuel = trip miles ÷ mpg, and trip cost = trip fuel × gas price.

Why is my real-world range lower than the calculator? +

The math assumes a steady mpg. Real economy drops with high speed, headwind, heavy load, luggage, and aggressive throttle. Highway cruising at a steady 60–70 mph is usually close to or better than the rated number; canyon or track riding can cut range 20–30%.

Does this work for liters and km? +

This tool uses US gallons, mpg, and miles. If you run metric, convert first: 1 US gallon ≈ 3.785 liters and 1 mile ≈ 1.609 km. The formulas (range = tank × economy, cost = distance ÷ economy × price) are identical in any consistent unit set.
